FAQS

How do I dispose of medical waste?

Commercial businesses must follow proper waste management procedures to dispose of medical waste. See the Regulated Medical Waste Management and Disposal Guidance from DEQ.

Household medical waste and sharps can be disposed of in your regular trash:

  • Household medical waste such as soiled bandages, dressings, gloves, and other soiled materials should be placed in a plastic bag and securely fastened before being placed in your garbage can.
  • Medications – Old and unused medicines should not be dumped down drains or toilets. They can be dropped off at some pharmacies who provide a medication deposit box and local Police or Sheriff’s offices.
  • Sharps – Household sharps (needles, syringes, and razor blades) are not technically considered hazardous waste. Please place them securely into a rigid plastic container (like an empty laundry soap bottle), tape the lid securely, label and deposit in your curbside garbage. Sharps can also be directly deposited at:
    • CDH Boise location (Armstrong Pl., when looking at the building, the far left hand side)
    • CDH Mountain Home location (E. 8th St., out front of the clinic)
    • Meridian Transfer Station’s sharps drop-off area during regular hours. For Meridian residents only.
  • Questions?

Refer to the Year-Round Prescription Drug Disposal Locations on the Idaho Office of Drug Policy website for a list and map of locations near you.
