If you are a school, faith based organization, youth club or any other organization working with youth in Ada, Boise, Elmore or Valley Counties and are interested in scheduling a Save My Family presentation, please visit Committing to 16 and fill out their online form.
The Impact of Social Media
A 2011 report by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University showed that teens who use social media were more likely to use tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana than teens who do not use social media, and risk was higher for those who had seen pictures of kids using or passed out from alcohol or drugs.
- Social media activates the reward pathway in the brain, similar to drug use
- Exposes youth to drugs or alcohol
- Makes it more accessible for anyone to buy or sell illegal substances
- Can contribute to feelings of sadness, depression, and social isolation
Save My Family Events
CDH supports Save My Family and Committing to 16 to help us provide live education focused on empowering parents, teachers, coaches, and kids.
Save My Family events are geared to provide parents with the tools, insights, and resources to better enable you to understand several of the major forces that are impacting your kids’ psychological, emotional, and physical well-being, including social media. They have assembled a panel of experts to provide training and inspiration on how to successfully navigate the waters that kids and teens are caught in.
The panel of experts includes Officer Gomez; Former FBI Agent Hart, pediatric neurologist, Dr. Condie; and event coordinator Kelli Rich, RN, BSN, DNP(c). They discuss social media, substance use, dependency, and other issues you need to know about to keep your kids safe.
All parents are invited and kids ages 12 and older are encouraged to accompany parents. Please note that the discussion will include topics that may be difficult for small children.
