ADA COUNTY, Idaho – This week, Central District Health (CDH) began the distribution and administration of the COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 6 months and older. CDH is currently accepting appointments for all age groups eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine at its clinic locations in Boise, McCall, and Mountain Home. CDH is also helping coordinate distribution of the vaccine to healthcare partners within its jurisdiction of Ada, Boise, Elmore, and Valley Counties.
There are two vaccines now available for the age group of 6 months through 5 years. Pfizer BioNTech’s new younger pediatric shot is for children 6 months through 4 years old and will be administered in a three-shot series. Moderna’s vaccine is for kids 6 months through 5 years and will be a two-dose series. Booster shots are not currently authorized for children under 5 years old.
“The availability of the COVID-19 vaccine for this younger age group is a welcome and long-awaited development,” says Russell Duke, Director of Central District Health. “For over two years now we have been encouraging parents to take all necessary steps to protect themselves and those in their care from this virus, and we are happy to have another layer of protection for the youngest people in our communities.”
To date, 8,900 COVID-19 vaccines for kids 5 and under have been allotted to CDH’s jurisdiction and shipped directly to enrolled vaccine providers. CDH will provide both the Pfizer and Moderna shots at its three clinic locations; parents or guardians can choose which vaccine they prefer. Vaccines for older age groups will also be available.
