Please consider Zika virus infection when evaluating symptomatic patients or pregnant women with recent travel to affected areas. For information on areas with active transmission go to http://www.cdc.gov/zika/geo/index.html. Pregnant women and their partners should know the risks associated with travel to Zika-affected areas.

Local transmission of Zika virus has been documented in the continental United States in the Miami Dade, Florida area and Zika virus infections continue to be reported in travelers returning to the United States. The vector mosquito species have not been found in Idaho.

Evaluation and Testing
Testing should be considered for people who have recently traveled to a Zika-affected area and are pregnant or present with clinically-compatible symptoms. Clinical guidance documents are available at: http://www.cdc.gov/zika/hc-providers/ .

Diagnostic testing is available through the Idaho Bureau of Laboratories (IBL) and testing through commercial laboratories is increasing. Please check with your lab for availability. Patients with samples processed through IBL must meet the indications for testing outlined in the Idaho Public Health Guidance for Zika Testing (found on http://epi.idaho.gov). Please note: Zika testing is not available at Central District Health Department.
